Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad
peace and blessing be upon him
The Prophert Joking
Islam is a realistic religion where human are not assumed to be angels and so Islam dealt with human on realistic bases. That is why Muslims are not asked to spend all their time praying actually they are supposed to live a normal life with all its duties, fears, sadness and laughter as well. From this realistic vision the noble prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, led the most perfect life expected. He spent his night praying, he supported justice without partiality, he did all what is required of him as a prophet for all mankind, but at the same time he was a human being who laughed and cried but in all aspects he never said except the truth.
Despite the burden of leadership that he carried bravely, he was never rude, stern or unforgiving. Consequently it was not strange to find may situations where the noble prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, joked with his companions but never had he told one single lie. Here are some examples:
With his wives:
The Mother of the believers Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her once traveled with the noble prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he asked her to race him, she was at that time young and thin, and she won the race. Few years later while traveling again the noble prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he raced her again and this time he won so he told her that that race was for the previous race.
With children:
It was narrated by Abdullah Ibn Alhareth that the noble prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would ask Abdullah, Aubaidullah and Kathir son of AlAbbas to race and would promise the winner a prize. They would race to him and when they reach him they would fall on his back and chest and he would simply hug and kiss them.
With his Companions:
- Anas Ibn Malik, may God be pleased with him, said that there was a man from the people of the desert whose name was Zaher. He used to give a present from the desert to the Prophet each time he visited him. The Messenger of Allah said of him, “Zaher is our desert and we are his arbanism". The Messenger of Allah loved him although he was so ugly.
One day, the Prophet came to him while he was selling his property. He embraced him from behind without letting the man see him.
The man said, “Leave me and tell me who are you" The man turned and knew that the man who was behind him was the Prophet. The Prophet said, “who will buy this slave?" The man said to the Prophet, “by God! You will find me unsalable". The Messenger of Allah said, “but you are not unsalable with God to Him you are so valuable". So, joking in this tradition is so clear and it is accompanied by the perfect nature and the good companionship.
- Also Anas lbn Malik, may God be pleased with him, said, “A man came to the Prophet and asked him to give him a camel to carry his belongings on. The Prophet said, “We shall raise you on the son of the she-camel". The man, who thought the Prophet meant a young camel said, “O Messenger of Allah! What shall I do with the son of the she-camel". The Messenger said, “Does the camel give birth to other than the she-camel".
- An- Nutman lbn Bashir, may God be pleased with him, talked about the Prophet saying, “Abu Bakr took the permission of the Prophet when he heard the loud voice of A'isha which was louder than that of the Prophet's.
Abu Bakr entered the room and was about to beat her and said, “I see that you raise your voice more than the prophet's". But the Prophet protected her and Abu Bakr went out and was so angry. The Messenger of Allah, God's blessing and peace be upon him, said to A'isha when abu Bakr left, “How did you see me protecting you from the man?" Abu Bakr was absent for few days then he visited them and found them living in peace. He said, “Introduce me in your peace as when you introduced me in your war.The Messenger of Allah said, “We did. We did".
- Anas Ibn Malik, may God be pleased with him, said that the Prophet said to him, “O you are the owner of the two ears (two eared- man)". It is a visible joking simply because each man has two ears.
- Al- Bukhari, may God be pleased with him narrated that a man called Abdallah and nicknamed Himara was the man who made the Messenger laugh. He was always brought drunk to the Prophet in order to be punished.
One day when he was brought, a man said, “God curse him. He is always brought drunk". The Messenger of Allah, God's blessing and peace be upon him, said, “Do not curse him. He loves Allah and His Messengers". So, despite the fact that this man is always drunk, he joked with the Messenger and also the Messenger joked with him.
- Anas lbn Malik, may God be pleased with him, said, “The Prophet had a cameleer who used to urge on (the Prophet's wives) while singing. That cameleer was called Anjasha. One day, he sang and as a result the camels raised their necks. The Messenger of Allah, God's blessing and peace be upon him, said, “O Anjasha! Woe unto you! Be kind with the bottles". By bottles he means women. So likening the women to bottles is a clear joking. He likened them to bottles because they are as weak as bottles. If any woman of them fell of her hawdaj (the back of the camel), she would be broken. If they were not the Mothers of the Believers, it would be said that the singing of the cameleer might affect the women badly (that the nice voice of the cameleer would attract the women to him).
- Masrook transmitted from Aisha, may God be pleased with her, she said, “One night, the Messenger of Allah told his wives a story. One of the women said, “O Messenger of Allah! The story is a fairy tale (Khurafa). He said, “Do you know what the meaning of Khurafa is? Khurafa was a man of the people of Uthra. He was captivated by the Jinn in the pre-Islamic age. He stayed with them for a long time. Then, they brought him back to the human world (and again he became an ordinary man). He told the people about the strange things he witnessed when he was with the Jinn. So, since that time, the people said, “It is a tale of Khurafa". Joking in this tradition is clear in the Prophet's answer. So, instead of blaming and criticizing the woman, he told her the real story of Khurafa.
- AlHasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “A woman came to the Prophet, God's blessing and peace be upon him, and asked him to call God for her to let her enter Paradise. He said, “O the mother of so and so, an old woman can not enter the Paradise". The old woman became so sad and she began crying. He said, “Tell her that she will not enter it when she is old because God the Great and Almighty, says, “We have created (their companions) of special creation and made them virgin- pure (and undefiled), beloved (by nature) equal in age". (The Inevitable Event V., 35 - 37)
- It happened also that a woman came to ask about her husband. The Prophet, God's blessing and peace be upon him, said, “You mean your husband who has whiteness in his eyes". The woman wept because she thought that her husband became blind. But then she was told that every eye has whiteness in it. So, this was a nice joking by the Prophet. As; Huraira, may God be pleased with him said “O Messenger of Allah! They say that you joke with us". The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I say but truth".
