Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad
peace and blessing be upon him
The Muhammadan Forbearance
Forbearance means self-control which means that one does not behave wrongly when he is angry or when he hears any bad statement. The following incidents are a clear proof of Muhammad’s forbearance:
1. When his head was fractured and his quadriceps were broken in the battle of Uhud, he said, ‘O God, forgive my people. They know not’.
2. When Zu- al- Khuwaysara said to him, «Act justly. This is my rightful possession». The Prophet was patient and said, ‘Woe unto you! Who will act justly if I do not?’ He did not take revenge and he did not allow his companions to do so because of the man’s accusation against him.
3. When a Bedouin pulled him strongly by his garment and said, «Put on the two camels of mine some of God’s money that you have. You give me not from your own money or from the money of your father». The Prophet, God’s blessing and peace be upon him, was patient and said, ‘The money is God’s money and I am His servant. Bedouin! Was it a right behaviour what you did with me? (Did you behave in a correct way with me)?’ The Bedouin said, «No». The Prophet said: ‘Why?’ The Bedouin said, «Because you do not have repayment of the fault». At that moment, the Prophet laughed and then he gave his orders to put some barley on one camel and some dates on the other one.
4. It is not proved that the Prophet advocated himself against any one who harmed him. He also never beat a servant or a woman at all. A’isha, may God be pleased with her, said, «I have never seen the Prophet advocating himself against any injustice he faced except when it was one of God’s sanctities. He never beat anyone except in fighting in the cause of Allah. He never beat a woman or a servant».
5. One of the rabbis of Jews whose name was Zaid Ibn Sa’na came to Medina in order to get back a debt from the Prophet, God’s blessing and peace be upon him. He pulled the Prophet strongly by his garment and said roughly, «O people of Abd al- Muttalib! You are so procrastinating». Omar rebuked him and spoke roughly to him. The Prophet smiled and said, ‘We —he and I — needed something better than this from you Omar. You should have ordered me of fine payment and ordered him of fine prosecution».
Then the Prophet ordered Omar to give the Jew his money and to add twenty measures to his debt because of the fear he had caused to him. That behavior by the Prophet caused the man to embrace Islam and he said, «All the prophetic signs were well- known to me except two I mentioned them not. His forbearance proceeds his ignorance and ignorance increases his forbearance». The Jew tested the Prophet in this incident and found him exactly as he was told before. However, this is only a drop of the sea of the Muhammadan forbearance.
