Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad
peace and blessing be upon him
The Muhammadan Justice
Justice is the opposite of injustice. God, the Great and Almighty, ordered of it in saying and in governing (judging).
Allah Most High said,
{Whenever ye speak, speak justly, even if a near relative is concerned}
He also said, {And when ye judge between man and man, that ye judge with justice}
(An’am, or Cattle V., 152).
Besides, heaven and earth were based on justice so how can not the Messenger be just and he is the one who
said, ‘Three men have to be respected as God Himself’ and he mentioned the just leader.
(Nisaa, or The Women V., 58.).
He also said that seven persons are protected by God in the Day of Judgment and he mentioned the just leader among them. He said, ‘In the Day of Judgment, the fair men are on gleam platforms’. So, the Prophet was so fair in his speech, action and judgment. The following are some incidents which show the prophetic justice:
1. When Quraysh appointed him as an arbitrator for putting the Balck Stone, that was after a long disagreement which was about to lead them to fight. They said that by God’s assistance, they will appoint the first one who passes by as an arbitrator and Muhammad was the first comer. They said, «This faithful is the arbitrator. We accept him». So, he put the stone in a garment and each tribe caught the border of the garment. Then the Prophet took the stone by his hands and put it in a certain place in the wall of Kaaba. He was fair in his judgment and that was of the signs of his justice.
2. When al- Makhzumiyah stole and when it became hard for the Muslims to punish her by cutting her hand, they chose the Prophet’s dear companion ‘Usama Ibn Zaid as an intercessor but Muhammad said, ‘O ‘Usama! Do you mediate in God’s affair? By God! If Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad stole, I would cut her hand’. That was of the signs of the Muhammadan justice.
3. Even among his wives, he used to be just. He said to his Lord, «O God! This is my oath concerning what I possess. Do not blame me concerning what You possess and I do not». He means that he treats all his wives equally and justly.
4. When the Bedouin said to him, «Be just. This is my own share». He said, ‘Woe unto you. Who is the just if I am not’.
5. In food and drink he said, ‘No vessel filled by a man is worst than his belly. It will be enough to him to eat only few morsels which support him. If he had to eat, then one third is for the food, one third is for the drink and one third is for the breath’. Muhammad, God’s blessing and peace be upon him, divided his time into three parts: One part is for his Lord, one part is for his household and one part is for himself. The part which was devoted to himself was also divided between him and the people. He said, ‘Tell me about the need of the one who is unable to tell me about it by himself. The one who does so (who tells me) will be protected by God in the Day of Great Horror (in the Day of Judgment)’.
6. Al- Hasan said that the Messenger of Allah, God’s blessing and peace be upon him, did not punish a person for the fault of another person and he did not believe one who speaks ill of the other.
By this way, the great justice of the beloved Muhammad appears so clear and it encourages every believer to follow the same steps and to make the Prophet his ideal pattern.
