Miracles of Prophet Muhammad
The Seventh Miracle : The Filling of an Empty Fat Vessel
Al-Hafez Abu Ya’la transmitted from Anas Ibn Malik, the servant of the Messenger of Allah, God’s blessing and peace be upon him, said, ‘My mother, Umm Sulaim had an ewe, she gathered some of its cooking fat (ghee) in a vessel and sent it to the Messenger of Allah in order to use it for food. She sent it with Rabibah (her maid).
When Rabibah met the Prophet,
she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Umm Sulaim has sent this vessel of fat to you’.
He said, ‘Empty this vessel and give it back to her’.
When the vessel was emptied, Rabibah returned to the house of Umm Sulaim who was not there and she hanged the vessel on a cotter.
When Umm Sulaim came, she saw that the vessel was still filled
with fat, she said, ‘O Rabibah! Haven’t I ordered you to take it to the
Messenger of Allah?’
Rabibah said, ‘Yes, in deed I did so. If you do not believe me, then
you can go to the Messenger of Allah and ask him’.
Umm Sulaim went to the Messenger of Allah with Rabibah and
she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! I sent a vessel filled with fat to
you with my maid Rabibah’,
the Messenger said, ‘Yes, she did so’.
Umm Sulaim said, ‘By the One who sent you, it is now filled with fat
and now it is flowing in drops’.
Anas said that the Messenger of Allah, God’s blessings and peace be upon him, said, ‘O Umm Sulaim, why are you surprised? God feeds you because you fed His Prophet! Eat from it and feed the others’’.
Umm Sulaim said that she soon came back to her house and distributed some of the fat and left the rest for herself and fed on it for one or two months.
