Neighbors' Rights in Islam

In Islam neighbors have numerous rights such as:
1-Prohibition of Harming Neighbor:
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him said: "By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.''
It was asked, "Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?''
He said, "One whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil"
(Sahih Bikhari: Volume 8, Book 73, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Number 45).

2-Recommendation to treat neighbor well

  • Mother of the believers Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, reported that the messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Jibril kept recommending me to treat my neighbor well until I thought that he would tell me to make him one of my heirs"
    (Bukhari:6014)
  • Abu Shuraih Al-Khuza`I, May Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "He who believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him be kind to his neighbor; and he who believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him show hospitality to his guest; and he who believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him either speak good or remain silent".
(Translation of Sahih Muslim, Book 1: The Book of Faith (Kitab Al-Iman), Number 0078)

3-The one who harms his neighbor should be cursed
Abu Hurayrah relates that a man approached the Prophet, peace be upon him, to complain about his neighbor. The Prophet told him: “Go home and be patient." The man returned with his complaint two or three times, whereupon the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Put your furniture out on the street"
The man did as he was told, and people came up to him asking him what he was doing, so he told them about his neighbor’s bad behavior. Upon hearing this, the people began cursing that neighbor, saying: “May Allah curse him."
Soon, the neighbor came out of his home and said: “Put your things back, for by Allah I will never harm you again"
(Sunan Abi Dawud:5153)

4- Caring for your neighbors
Abu Dharr, May Allah be pleased with him, reported: Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded me thus, "O Abu Dharr! Whenever you prepare a broth, put plenty of water in it, and give some of it to your neighbors".
(Translation of Sahih Muslim, Book 32: The Book of Virtue, Good Manners and Joining of the Ties of Relationship,Number 6357)

5- Co-operation with your neighbors
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No-one should prevent his neighbor from fixing a wooden peg in his wall." Abu Huraira said (to his companions), "Why do I find you averse to it? By Allah, I certainly will narrate it to you."
(Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Book 43: Oppressions, Volume 3, Number 643)

6- Refraining from harming your neighbor is a part of faith
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last day should not harm his neighbor"
(Bukhari: 6475)

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, counted the bad neighbors as being one of three bad types of people: "There are three worst types of people: a ruler who, if you do well, does not appreciate it, and if do wrong, he does not forgive you for it; a bad neighbour who, if he sees something good, he conceals it, and if he sees something bad he broadcasts it; and a wife who, when you are present she annoys you and if you go away, she betrays you."
(Reported by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, 18/267)

7- The best neighbor
Abdullah bin `Umar, May Allah be pleased with them, reported: Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "The best of friends, in the sight of Allah, is the one who is best to his friend, and the best of neighbors, in the sight of Allah, is the one who is best to his neighbor".
(Tirmidhi, hadith no. 1944, Ahmad, vol. 2,, p. 167, ad-Darimi, vol.2, p. 215 and al-Hakim, vol. 1, p. 164, with Sahih Isnad)

8- A righteous neighbor contributes to happiness
The companion Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that our noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:" Four things contribute to happiness: a righteous wife, a spacious home, a righteous neighbor and a comfortable means of transport. And four things contribute to misery: A bad neighbor, a bad wife, a cramped home and bad means of transport"
(Ibn Hibban: 1232)

9-The sin of disturbing your neighbor is compounded
Abu Zabyah al-kalai reported:"I heard al-Miqdad Ibn Al-Aswad saying that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked the people about adultery, and they said:" It is Haram (unlawful); Allah and His Messenger have forbidden it"
He said: "Verily, for a man to commit adultery with ten women would be a lesser sin for him than if he commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor"
He (Miqdad) said: "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked them about stealing, they said:" It is Haram; Allah and His Messenger have forbidden it"
He said:" If a man were to steal from ten houses it would be a lesser sin for him than if he were to steal from his neighbor's house"
(Ahmed: volume 6, p. 8, Bukhari: Al-Adab al-Mufrad, hadith no. 103)

10-Do not eat your full while your neighbor is hungry
Abdullah Ibn Musawir narrated: "I heard Ibn Abbas mention Ibn Az-Zubair saying that he was a miser, then he said: I heard the messenger of Allah say: He is not a believer who eats his fill whilst his neighbor beside him goes hungry"
(Bukhari, op. cit, hadith no.112, al-Hakim, vol. 4, p 167 a similar report given by al-Bazzar, hadith no. 119)

11- Love your neighbor
Anas, may Allah be pleased with him narrated that he heard our noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, no man truly believes until he loves for his neighbor –or his brother- what he loves for himself"
(Muslim:45,72)

12-Never scorn your neighbor's gift
Sahih Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: "O Muslim women! No one should scorn the gift of a neighbor, even if it is (only) a sheep's foot"
(Bikhari: 6017)

13-Harming a neighbor may lead to hell-fire
Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him reported: A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! There is a woman who prays, gives charity and fasts a great deal, but she harms her neighbors with her speech (by insulting them)"
He said: "She will go to hell"
The man said: "O messenger of Allah! There is (another) woman who is well-known for how little she fasts and prays, but she gives charity from the dried yoghurt she makes and she does not harm her neighbors"
He said: "She will go to paradise"
(Ahmad, vol. 4, p. 166, Ibn Hibban, hadith no. 2054)

14-Tolerance when treating neighbors
Mutarrif said: "I heard that you (he means Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him) have said that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah loves three and hates three.'"
Abu Dharr said, "I do not think that I would tell lies about the Messenger of Allah."
Mutarrif said, "Then who are the three whom Allah loves?"
Abu Dharr (quoting the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man who fights for the sake of Allah, with perseverance and hoping for reward from Him, and fights until he is killed, and you find this in the Book of Allah.' Then he recited: "Truly Allah loves those who fight in His cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure." [al-Saff 61:4] Mutarrif asked, "Then who?"
He said, "A man who has a bad neighbor who annoys and disturbs him, but he bears it with patience and forbearance until Allah ends the matter either during his lifetime or upon the death of either of them."
( Reported with a sahih isnad by Ahmad and al-Tabarani. See Majma' al-Zawa'id, 8/171.)
