Neighbors' Rights in Islam
Neighbors in the Holy Quran
Below we will see some of the Quranic verses that order the Muslim to deal kindly with his neighbor:
- "Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbor who is near of kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful" (4:36).
- "If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease (evil desire for adultery, etc.), and those who spread false news among the people in Al¬Madinah, cease not, We shall certainly let you overpower them, then they will not be able to stay in it as your neighbors but a little while." (33:60).
Imam Qurtubi said: "As for the neighbor, Allah, may He be exalted, has ordered us, in His book through His Prophet, to protect our neighbor, to respect his rights and to care about his welfare. Do you not see that He, may He be glorified, has mentioned the neighbor after the parents and the close relatives, for He, may He be exalted, says, "neighbors who are near" and "neighbors who are strangers" meaning those who are not related to you.
So, Allah considered that the Hypocrites presence in Madinah made them neighbors.
